Oakland Class Ore Freighter - I-War 1 Version

Author:

Manufacturer:
NSO Laplace
Description:
The Oakland class freighter is a smaller variant of the Tir class freighter specifically designed to carry super-massive neutronium.

Using the same thruster assembly and dual fusion ring system of its larger sister gave it the huge power necessary to haul up to ten pods of Neutronium ore.

Oaklands were subject to many attacks of piracy by the Indies during the Independence War due to the high value of the cargo they carried. In an effort to turn the tables on the pirates the Commonwealth turned several Oaklands into heavily armed 'Q-Ships', with hidden gatling cannons and fighter launchers, more than capable of destroying a wing of ships.

Description:
After the Independence War NSO Laplace scaled down production of the Oakland class freighter, due to competition from Maas Corporations newer and more efficient range of bulk freighters. However the Oakland remained a popular choice with older freighter captains due to its ruggedness, even though spare parts were becoming hard to obtain.

Description:
The Tir class heavy freighter was the workhorse of both the Commonwealth Navy and the Indies in the Independence War. Capable of carrying twenty pods, each a huge 50 meters square, they formed the backbone of the Commonwealth and Indie empires.

After the Independence War they fell out of favour due to newer more efficient freighters from Maas Corporation, and unlike their smaller sisters - the Oakland class - they were considered uneconomical, and taken out of service.

Description:
Cargo pods are used to transport a wide variety of objects across interstellar distances.

Though cargo pods are designed to be carried by large jump-capable freighters, each pod is in fact an automated short-range spaceship in its own right, with thrusters, sensors and a sophisticated AI autopilot.

The pods systems enable it to manoeuvre short distances, allowing it to load and unload itself from ships and stations without using tugs or drones. The thrusters also act to bring the pod to a stop should the pod accidentally be detached from its mother vessel, and are used for station-keeping when the pod is placed in a cargo holding area.

Cargo pods come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but the standard configuration is a 50 meter cube. The huge volume makes it possible to transport bulk items such as water and foodstuffs in large quantities, with enough room to spare for environmental and life-support systems should they be required.

The very largest pods can only be carried on Megatransporters, and are capable of holding up to a corvette sized starship.

Commonwealth Blitz Class Fighter (C-Fighter)

Description:
The C-Fighter was a top-secret project developed by the Commonwealth Navy to break the cycle of ever increasing size and firepower.

Small by Navy standards (20m long), lightly armored, but with awesome firepower and incredible maneuverability one on it's own was vulnerable, but a swarm of them could defeat whole squadrons of standard sized ships.

Too small to carry shields or jump engines they were designed to be carried through hyperspace in specially designed carriers, though it was found to be more effective to ferry them two at a time docked to corvette class ships as the carriers proved to be prime targets for the Indies.

Description:
Virtually a sister vessel to the Dreadnaught class corvette - it can use the same command section, and many of the components are common - it is smaller and has less defensive systems, but is much faster and more agile.

Tariq class patcoms are used primarily as scout and system patrol ships, have found a place in many planetary defense fleets, and are also favored by customs agents.

Older patcom vessels had only an upper shield, leaving them vulnerable to attacks from below, but some modern variants now have both an upper and lower shield. Some versions have even been retrofitted with beam weapons or gatling cannons.

Description:
The workhorse of the Commonwealth Navy, the NSO-929 Dreadnaught class corvette saw distinguished service during the Independence War.

The main hull carries two Class-Two shuttles, which normally serve as the crew quarters (hence their name 'Accommodation Modules', and also as life-boats in an emergency. The accommodation modules are also replaceable with specialised science, salvage, cargo and  prospecting modules.

The nose of the ship is a detachable Command Section, which contains the main bridge. The ComSec as it is known is a fully autonomous shuttle, and is often used for reconnaissance due to its relatively small size and low thermal signature.

The most famous corvette - the CNV-301 Dreadnaught was originally commanded by the legendary captain Jefferson Clay, a martyr of the Independence War who sacrificed his ship and his life to save hundreds of fellow servicemen.

Later salvaged and re-commissioned, the Dreadnaught played a pivotal role in the ending of the Independence War. Under the command of an unknown captain it was destroyed during a ramming maneuver that caused the death of President King, bringing the confict to a close.

A lesser known corvette called Spartacus also distinguished itself on the Independent 'Indie' side during the war. Under the command of Edison Hayes it helped foil a plot to prolong the conflict, and unlike the Dreadnaught it survived the war. It is now preserved, resplendent  in its original colourful paint scheme, in the SecPat Independence War museum in low Earth orbit, Sol system.

Description:
The Bastille class destroyer is a formidable ship, even though the basic design has remained essentially unchanged since its first inception.

Port and starboard under-wing mounted dual gatling cannons, mounted on 360 degree turrets allow engagement of targets from almost any angle, while a front mounted dual gatling cannon helps with frontal assaults. The shield systems are extremely strong, especially over the prow.

Uniquely the Bastile class destroyer can bring all three primary weapons to bear on a single target, something few vessels can survive for long.

In fact the the Bastille class has been so successful that NSO Laplace took many of the design elements and incorporated them into the Guillotine class heavy destroyer.

Later variants included the Interdictor sub-class, which carries disruptor missiles in addition to the normal missile complement, and the Spearhead sub-class, which replaces the forward cannon with a cutting beam for station and capital ship assaults.
